Surveys
The INA Private Sector Survey aims to collect accurate and up-to-date information on the challenges, opportunities, and experiences of businesses in Papua New Guinea. The findings are used to inform government policy, guide development partner support, and monitor changes in the business and investment environment over time.
2017 INA's Private Sector Survey
The Institute of National Affairs (INA) is once again conducting its five-yearly Private Sector Survey on the Business and Investment Environment in Papua New Guinea.
This nationwide survey is designed to better understand the challenges and issues faced by businesses in PNG, and to provide informed policy advice to government agencies, development partners, and other stakeholders. It also enables comparisons over time with previous surveys, which have been conducted since the 1990s.
Past surveys—supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), World Bank, and the Australian Government—have been widely used to inform policy development and shape practical interventions. The 2017 survey is funded by the Australian Government through the Papua New Guinea Governance Facility (PGF).
Why This Survey Matters
Businesses in PNG continue to face numerous obstacles—ranging from infrastructure shortfalls, power and communication challenges, and foreign exchange access, to broader systemic issues.
This survey provides tangible, evidence-based insights from businesses across the country—whether large or small, local or foreign-owned, and operating in agriculture, manufacturing, or services. These insights are shared with:
National and local policymakers
The private sector itself, through reports and workshops
- International agencies
